Colder weather is creeping in now, as we head towards December and the festive season, and it’s a common time for skin issues to pop up. The colder, dryer weather disturbs skin’s lipid function and moisture levels and can have a negative effect on many skin types, causing skin freak outs, dryness, flaking, itching, tightness and fine wrinkles and lines to become more apparent as skin looses some of it’s elasticity and hydration. Not to mention the additional burden of having to wear a mask frequently, which can cause skin issues in itself, with breakouts and ‘Maskne’ becoming more widespread.
You can help your skin transition to the seasonal change by slowly adding in more moisture and applying products more frequently throughout the day. You want to find products, for face and body, that sink in easily and leave skin feeling silky and comforted. It can be harder in winter to achieve bouncy, happy, glowing skin, but it is far from impossible with the right routine in place.
Instead of switching suddenly from a lightweight moisturiser to a rich, heavy one, it’s a good idea to gradually ramp up the hydration by adding in a few drops of a Hyaluronic Acid serum here or a few drops of an oil there. Look for skincare that contains natural emollients such as Shea, Jojoba, Avocado and other nut and seed butters and oils. For skin that’s feeling very delicate, dry and sensitive avoid anything heavily fragranced or with essential oils as these can add to the irritation. If you use a facial wash, try switching to a balm or cream cleanser as they are more likely to leave skin feeling soft and supple after use. If you have blemished skin, don’t be afraid of adding moisture into your routine, even in the form of an oil. A really good quality, clean product is unlikely to cause blocked pores and further breakouts, instead properly nourishing your skin can actually help it to become healthier, reduce breakouts and aid healing.
In the morning, after cleansing, a serum containing Hyaluronic Acid will help to lock in moisture and make the skin feel smoother, with more elasticity, and you can add an additional moisturising cream over it to seal in nourishment and leave skin feeling super soft. Oils are great for boosting a favourite cream or lotion and helping to further seal in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and moisture or can be used on their own. A similar routine at night will help to soothe and calm your skin after a long day and allow it to regenerate overnight. You can also do regular moisturising face masks, 2-3 times a week to give another hydration boost and soothe dry skin. For very dry skin patches or chapped lips keep a product on hand to soothe these problem areas throughout the day, and ensure you drink adequate amounts of water (most dry lips are caused simply by dehydration) and eat plenty of good fats, Omega 3's, nuts and seeds etc.
Skincare-infused make up such as Ilia Beauty’s Super Serum Skin Tint or Juice Beauty’s CC Cream can help to plump up the skin and leave it looking dewy and luminous at any time of the year. Not only do both of these best-selling, multi-use products add colour and a healthy glow to skin they also contain a mineral SPF that protects skin year-round from sun damage. These can be applied with concealer for light, natural coverage, or if you prefer heavier coverage it’s possible to add a nourishing foundation and powder over them. When it comes to using high-quality, natural beauty products each layer is going to help protect and feed the skin. Check ingredients lists, know what each ingredient does and stay away from anything suspect (use Think Dirty or the EGW's SkinDeep database to check product and ingredient safety). Putting harsh, harmful ingredients onto our skin is only going to exasperate external skin conditions and, rather frighteningly, can also be absorbed into the skin too adding to the toxic load that we are all experiencing from modern life.
For hands that get dry throughout the day, especially with the constant washing we’re all doing, it’s a great idea to keep a good hand cream on your desk or in your bag and apply it frequently throughout the day. A good body lotion or oil, and regular body brushing to boost circulation, will keep limbs looking radiant and keep dry patches at bay.
Don’t forget to stay hydrated with plenty of water to ensure that skin stays healthy and lips soft and plump, and to eat plenty of organic vegetables, fresh fruit, good quality protein and Omega 3’s, because the most luminous, healthy glow really comes from within and is a reflection of your overall inner health.
