Healthy Ageing & Our Skin

What Does Healthy Ageing Entail? How Can We Ensure Skin Vibrancy Throughout Our Years?

 (3-4 minute read)

We see lines and wrinkles as something that are inevitable, and to be embraced and appreciated. After-all, by the time they arrive they are a reminder that we are blessed to have lived, laughed, loved and expressed throughout many decades.
This natural ageing process is simple part of the precious and valuable cycle of life. However, at the same time, it is understandable to want to look radiant, healthy and full of vitality at every age, and thankfully this is something that we can control and manage to a great extent - a direction that can be supported through our nutritional and lifestyle choices.
Healthy Skin Ageing and Holistic Skincare
Embrace ageing

When we are honest with ourselves, we know that processed foods, sugar, seed oils, alcohol, cigarettes, poor sleep, stress, lack of exercise, too much screen time etc. all contribute to chronic inflammation and accelerated ageing in the body. This is often know as inflammaging, and not only affects our skin - speeding up the process of wrinkling, sagging and dulling - but is also at the root of many chronic and inflammatory health conditions.

Eat an organic, wholefood diet rich in colour

We can all take small steps daily to increase our longevity, balance our bodies and support healthy aging. One of the best ways to do this is to choose an organic, wholefood diet that is anti-inflammatory, low in sugar, low in seed oils, and packed full of antioxidants and plant pigments - from a wide variety of fruits and vegetables - to support glowing skin at every age. Sugar in particular is something to avoid as it sticks to amino acids present in collagen and elastin, producing Advanced Glycation End products or “AGEs", which literally ages your skin more rapidly. Sugar and seed oils will also cause inflammation, as will gut issues and food sensitivities. A natural, organic and wholefood diet instead will support a strong gut, balance hormones and help to reduce, or even reverse, skin issues such as acne, eczema and psoriasis. This will all benefit your skin and support radiance and health at every age.
Drinking pure natural spring water for best hydration natural living
Drink plenty of pure, mineralised water

Drinking plenty of pure, mineralised or spring water will also ensure adequate intake of minerals while hydrating every cell in your body, including your skin, leaving it more plumped and glowing. We like to add a healthy pinch of high quality sea salt to our water for the best ever hydration (and a decrease in dark circles under the eyes!).

When it comes to skincare, you don't have to spend a fortune but - just like with our food - quality counts. Be discerning, and look for nature's ingredients to support aging skin - we love Resveratrol, Vitamin C, Hyaluronic Acid, Rosehip, Avocado, bio-retinols, Calendula, Aloe and Rosemary to support our skin through the years. Look for formulas with a minimal number of ingredients, and ensure that you know what every ingredients does/is for. Levae out the ingredients that seem overly complicated or unnecessary. You can use EWG's Skin Deep database to find out more about ingredients that you may not know, and you can also use this database and the ThinkDirty app to find out more about the safety score of the products that you are using. This all helps to inform and empower you to make the best choices for your skin.
Healthy Ageing Supplementation Clean Natural Living
Supplement to boost & support nutrition

In an ideal world none of us would need to supplement, but unfortunately with decreasing soil and food quality many of us are lacking in nutrients, whether that we vitamins, minerals and even macro-nutrients such as protein or healthy fats. This is where good quality supplementation can really help to increase antioxidants and collagen, while at the same time decreasing inflammation and supporting hormone balance. We love to drink homemade bone broth regularly for gut support and to boost collagen production. We adore adding Your Super's Organic Plant Collagen Mix to smoothies and lattes, for its delicious creamy flavour and a collagen boost, as well as their Super Green's Mix and their Golden Mellow Mix for added antioxidants, minerals and to reduce inflammationThese often go in a morning smoothie with frozen berries, coconut milk, avocado, spinach and a few drops of stevia for a super smoothie that is anti-inflammatory, low in sugar and packed with protein, collagen, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, to support a healthy gut, fuel you for the morning and aid glowing and radiant skin

We also have excellent things to say about Sun Potion's Pearl Powder, and suggest that - if you haven't already - you should look into Pearl as a food to support longevity, especially in relation to skin and bone health as you age.

Another wonderful tool in our arsenal for healthy ageing is the HigherDOSE Red Light Therapy Face Mask which is made from the highest quality medical grade silicone and mimics low level, restorative wavelengths found in natural sunlight - dosing your skin for optimal health and radiance, while promoting cellular detoxification, reducing inflammation and wrinkling. It also helps to improve circulation and stimulate collagen production, which is especially useful once we hit our 30's and 40's and life gets very busy just at the time when we may be beginning to gradually loose some of our natural skin vibrancy.  The mask is gentle and non-invasive, helping warm the skin, boost your mood and glow. We like to wear it in the evening, while reading a book for 30 minutes before bed.

So what else can we do to ensure healthy, vibrant skin throughout the decades? Well apart from a great diet, good quality skincare, adequate hydration and nutritional supplementation, it's also important to focus on getting good quality sleep. Chronic poor sleep quality increases signs of aging, diminishes the nature skin barrier function and will result in lower satisfaction with your appearance. Stress will also negatively impact the skin and can exacerbate skin conditions, so it's vital to have tools in place to manage the stressors that will come our way.
Healthy Ageing Natural Holistic Lifestyle
Exercise & de-stress for better skin and healthy ageing
.
Exercise is also important, as without it it's likely that things will feel loose rather than taut. It's also essential for healthy, strong bones as we age. If you don't use it you will loose it! Exercise will also help us sweat out toxins from our body, as well as increasing circulation and glow. We love to do a cold blast at the end of a warm shower. You can gradually work your way up to 1-2 minutes of cold water to boost circulation, energise and increase that healthy radiance.

Find the wellbeing rituals that you enjoy, that energise and empower you and do those as often as you can. Have fun, get outdoors, get in the sunshine, find things that light you up. Ensure your life supports your wellbeing and your happiness. Taking small steps to improve your skin and overall health is a great way to gradually see positive and welcome change - and to encourage radiance, glow and vitality in our skin at every age.
